The retrofit sensor keeps a low-power eye on the rear seat and cabin continuously after the engine stops. It combines seat-occupancy sensing (weight plus motion, so a sleeping child isn’t dismissed as cargo) with an ambient temperature reading. The cabin-temperature fail threshold is set at clinical references — on an 80°F day a closed car can hit 125°F in sixty minutes (see the temperature timeline) and a child’s core temperature becomes lethal well before the cabin itself feels unsurvivable to an adult. As soon as the sensor registers occupant-plus-temperature inside the parked vehicle, the chain starts.
The companion app paints a full-screen, persistent alert on the driver’s phone the instant detection crosses the threshold. A loud rising-tone siren overrides silent mode — it is not a notification you can mute or dismiss from a lock screen. The driver has a sixty-second acknowledgement window: tap once and the entire chain stops. If the driver doesn’t tap, Step 3 fires. That window is the same sixty-second window HeatSentry’s escalation layer runs on, and it’s intentionally long enough to forgive a missed tap on a busy morning but short enough that the next two stages trigger before conditions worsen.
HeatSentry is rolling out a forty-participant SMS study with caregivers of children under five. Each morning a single yes-or-no text reaches the driver with the same back-seat question, well before the cabin reaches failure temperature. The study shape and protocol are on the About page. The reminder is deliberately quiet — one text, one question — and runs in parallel to Steps 1 and 2 so a morning disruption doesn’t slip through either the sensor or the phone.
If the driver doesn’t acknowledge the app push, the alert cascades through a configurable list of emergency contacts in priority order (spouse, grandparent, neighbor — whoever the family sets). Each contact gets a loud out-of-channel push: SMS, automated voice call, or both depending on what the contact list is configured for. If the contact chain doesn’t break the loop, the alert hands off to 911 with the vehicle’s last-known GPS fix so dispatch isn’t working blind. The sensor is just the trigger that starts this chain — the chain is the product.
HeatSentry is built as an any-car retrofit. The sensor ships self-contained — battery, cellular radio, GPS, seat-occupancy sensor stack, ambient temperature sensor — and installs on the rear seat headrest or roof liner in under five minutes. There is no OBD-II port tap, no app pairing with the head unit, no brand telematics subscription, and no specific model-year requirement.
